The second edition of The Signal is online now!

As I was compiling the playlist for this show it started to take on a very indie-pop feel, so that’s something of running theme.  I suspect in later shows we might do take on a more a themed approach, although personally I like to keep things pretty eclectic.

Stevie Jackson from Belle & Sebastian

Stevie Jackson, guitarist with Belle & Sebastian is our special guest this time round.  Stevie is a really cool guy, really friendly and pretty insightful regarding the making of The Life Pursuit.  I’m glad we managed to play his track To Be Myself Completely – for me it’s one of the best tracks on the new B&S album and has a stylish 60s/contemporary sound, which the band excel at.

This interview was recorded just before Belle & Sebastian’s gig in
Belfast in Feb 2006, and just before the interview started Stevie was fondly reminiscing about the incredible gig Belle & Sebastian performed in
Belfast in Dec 2001.  That was a really unique, special night, chocablock with sensitive covers and in hindsight, it became a wonderful celebration of the Jeepster years.  The gig back in Feb was great fun too, but the first night in Belfast will be hard to beat.

This show kicks off with a really strong opener in The Gossip, who are a must-see live band.  The Revelations’ track was one of my favourite singles from last year, I really hope they release something new soon.  And what a thrill to bring you the new Regina Spektor single!

So that’s The Show #2 – let us know what you think below.

Erm, no – fortunately the title of this post isn’t what the Radio Magnetic bosses said when they heard the first edition of The Signal.  It just happens to be the Long Blondes song I’m listening to at the minute.  We’re working on a feature on the Sheffield band for Episode 3 of The Signal in future weeks.

In the meantime, Show 2 is online now, featuring an interview with Belle & Sebastian.  More details shortly!

So The Signal’s first transmission is online!  Hopefully this first edition gives you an idea of what the focus of the show is – great alternative music mixed in with features and chat with the people responsible for the sounds we love.

Alan & Jamie RakesRecording the Rakes interview was a real joy for me.  It was recorded with Alan and Matthew before the Rakes played support to Franz Ferdinand at the Belfast Odyssey in November 2005.  The boys were on great form – they were just coming to end of the tour and were looking forward to their first appearance on Later With Jools Holland a few days later.  In fact about a week or so after the interview was recorded they started work on a new single, which ended up being All Too Human, released in Feb 2006.

There’s a hell of a lot of good music out there at the minute, and we couldn’t fit it all in this show – but fortunately that means there’ll be loads more for next time!  I’m just really pleased we could kick off The Signal with two singles as amazing as the current ones from The Long Blondes and Camera Obscura.  I can’t wait to hear more from Love Is All too.

The Signal’s first transmission is now online at the brand new RadioMagnetic site! Woo hoo!

Check out the show page here, and the actual show itself is available via Windows Hi or Windows Lo. There are plans to make all the shows at RadioMagnetic available in Quicktime too.

I’ll be posting the playlist and full details of the programme shortly. In the meantime we’ve been working on future editions – you can expect features and interviews with the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Guillemots, Grandaddy and Camera Obscura, plus loads of cool new music!

I’m still finding my way around the new RM site and seeing which buttons I can press without making it explode!  I’ll know soon about the email address for the show.

In the meantime check out some of the other brilliant shows at RadioMagnetic – there’s a direct link to all the indie/alternative shows here.
